Looking at your picture from when we first met
You gave me a smile that I could never forget
And nothing I could do could protect me from you that night
Wrapped around your finger, always on my mind
The days would blend 'cause we stayed up all night
Yeah, you and I were everything, everything to me

Tommy Oliver sighed as he trudged into the house, tossing his briefcase and keys
on the kitchen counter before he hit the play button on the blinking answering
machine. As the machine started speaking, he stuck his head into the fridge to
look for something edible.
“Hey Bro, it’s me. Man, you missed the best reunion we’ve had to date. Believe
it or not, everyone but you showed up. What’s up with that man? And yes, I mean
EVERYONE showed up, including Aisha and a certain pink wearing gymnast that we
both know. Believe it or not, she actually asked me for your phone number. I
gave it to her, hope you don’t mind.”
Tommy froze in mid bite of the apple he’d pulled out of the fruit drawer. He
absently rubbed the heel of his right hand over his heart when he heard Jason
mention HER.
“Look, Bro, call me when you get a chance. Let me know you’re still living and
breathing over there in dinosaur land, ok? Talk to you later.”
Sighing, Tommy moved to open his briefcase when the answering machine played the
second message.
“So the good doctor’s too busy to come see his friends? I should have known
Jason’s been badgering you about coming, just like he’s been doing to me since
forever. It’s me, Tommy. I just wanted to call and talk to you for a few
minutes, but I guess you’re not home right now. You missed one hell of a party.
Aisha and I are heading back to Miami in the morning, so I guess I’ll try you
once I get home. Later Handsome.”

I just want you to know that I've been fighting to let you go
Some days I make it through and then there's nights that never end
I wish that I could believe that there's a day you'll come back to me
But still I have to say I would do it all again
Just want you to know
All the doors are closing I'm tryin' to move ahead
And deep inside I wish it's me instead
My dreams are empty from the day, the day you slipped away

A mixture of emotions welled up inside Tommy at the sound of HER voice. Contrary
to what his friends thought, and what he’d actually admit to in public, he’d
thought of her quite a few times over the years.
Yes, he still ached with betrayal and hurt for what she’d done to him with the
letter, and after Murianthias when she’d told him the reasons why, but there was
always a part of him that maintained the faint hope that they’d eventually get
their happy ending. He believed himself too big a believer in fate and destiny
not to. But there was also part of him that didn’t know if he’d ever be able to
fully forgive her for betraying what they had so quickly.
Hearing her voice just brought all those conflicting emotions to the surface
again, where he had to take them out and examine them instead of pushing them
away and burying himself in his work and being a Ranger.
However, if there was one thing he’d learned over the years, it was that you had
to face your fears head on, no matter what.
Jason’s phone call two months before about the reunion had only brought back the
memories and the knowledge that he’d have to take a look at every feeling and
emotion he’d experienced in regards to Kimberly. In the grand scheme of things,
they’d had more happy times then not, and had shared a love unseen by any other
Ranger couple in history, and while the letter had overshadowed those facts, it
seemed to be a minor thing now.
“It’s not like we were the only high school sweethearts in history to break up;
it happens everyday,” he muttered to himself as he made his way down to the
former command center for the Dino Thunder Rangers. “The question is, is the
letter something that will keep me from going after whatever it is I really want
now? Is it such a thing that would keep me from telling her how I really feel,
if and when I decide to talk to her?”
Tommy shook his head. Looking into his heart, his first answer to those
questions made him ache – putting all of it aside, deep down, he still loved
Kimberly Hart. He definitely didn’t love her like he had when he was seventeen;
instead, he loved her like a man who had the benefit of looking back on his own
mistakes in past relationships to see that what they had was something he’d
never had since he’d been with her, and nothing he would ever have without her.
Trying to blot out thought for a moment, Tommy turned on the radio next to him.
Just his luck, the station was playing something he really didn’t want to listen
to – a Backstreet Boys song. “Ladies and gentlemen, here’s the new one from the
hardest working boys in showbiz. “Just Want You To Know” by the Backstreet
Boys.”

Tommy groaned when he stood from his chair, joints and muscles protesting having
been in one position for too long. “I’m getting old,” he grumbled, pushing
himself up the stairs. He noticed the light on the answering machine blinking,
and sighed. He hadn’t heard the phone ringing when he’d been down in the lab,
but then again, he’d lost himself in his work instead of thinking of HER, or
Jason’s persistent calls.
Creeping over, he hit play. “Hey Tommy, its Kat. Jason asked me to call you and
remind you to call one of us and let us know you’re still alive. Talk to you
later, Fly Boy.”
Tommy rolled his eyes, and then stiffened in surprise when he heard the next
message. “Hi, Handsome; It’s me. Told you I’d call back. Aisha and I got home a
couple of hours ago. I guess you’re still not home, or you really don’t want to
talk to me. I’ll...um...I’ll leave you alone. Take care, Tommy.”
The message ended, leaving Tommy aching in its wake. ‘It’s been nearly nine
years, and I’ve let the hard feelings go. Why not try to rebuild at least our
friendship and see where it goes from there?’
Tommy snatched the phone up and dialed Jason’s number. “You’ve reached Jason and
Kat. We can’t come to the phone right now, but if you leave your name and
number, we’ll get back to you as soon as we can. Thanks.”
“Jason, it’s me. When you get a chance, call me. I want Kim’s phone number. Tell
the others hi for me and give Kat a hug for me. Later.”
